When I first started exploring surface pattern design, I thought it was all about creating beautiful artwork. What I've learned is that it's so much more than that.
Here are five lessons that have shaped my journey:
1. Inspiration is Everywhere
Some of my favorite pattern ideas have come from seashells on the beach, vintage quilts, flowers in my garden, and even a morning walk with my dog. Learning to slow down and observe the world around me has become one of my greatest creative tools.
2. Imperfection Creates Character
Not every line needs to be perfect. In fact, the little quirks and hand-drawn details often make a pattern feel more authentic and unique. I've learned to embrace the imperfections that give my work personality.
3. Color Changes Everything
The same pattern can tell a completely different story simply by changing the color palette. Experimenting with color has taught me how much emotion and energy it brings to a design.
4. Repetition Requires Patience
Creating a seamless repeat isn't always as easy as it looks. It takes practice, attention to detail, and plenty of testing. Every "mistake" has taught me something new about the design process.
5. Creativity Grows Through Consistency
The more I create, the more ideas seem to appear. Waiting for inspiration rarely works. Showing up regularly—even when I don't feel creative—has been one of the best ways to grow as a designer. Surface pattern design has taught me to see beauty in everyday moments, trust the creative process, and keep learning along the way.
